To certain.

"The first Noel, the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay..."

This is one of the five carols that I will be teaching my Sunday school children.  I intend to clarify something that vexed my childhood.  For years - and when I say "years", I mean between the age of 5 and say 24 - I couldn't figure out what the verb to certain meant.  You see, I thought of those two words as a verb phrase...therefore confusing me.  I remember thinking, maybe it's something they did in Bible times.  To certain. 

Make no mistake - I won't let my Sunday school children wonder.  I intend to clarify the lyrics of all the carols we are learning.
