I've been asked if I miss teaching 2nd grade. I'll be honest with you - it's a tricky question to answer. I miss teaching the children how to read and watching their faces light up when they understand a new concept. Of course - I miss the 2 week break at Christmas and having summers off {although when I taught, I had to work during the summer months so I don't necessarily miss having those months off...I miss the notion of summer break. I'm idealistic like that}.
Do I regret quitting teaching? No. Not for a second.
I love my job at the District. I love my co-workers. I love this little mission field where the Lord has planted me.
Today my favorite co-worker discovered a stink bug crawling around in his desk drawer. He, of course, called me into his office on urgent business. {It's always urgent!} I waltz into his office and he said, "Come here and look at this." Whenever he says, "Look at this!" and he's all secret-like, I get nervous. One time, he wanted me to come and look at something and that SOMETHING turned out to be a grasshopper. {I hate, despise, loathe grasshoppers. They fly. I, also, do not like moths and/or most birds.} Since the grasshopper, he really hasn't called me in to look at one of God's creatures lost in the confines of my favorite's office. A year and a half ago, he had a mouse in his office. He loved that little mouse. I'm drawing a blank on the name he gave it. But he would tell me, "Angie, he came out today and waved at me!" The mouse didn't wave. I questioned the caffeine content of his morning java.
Today the "Look at this!" involved a brown stink bug. {Ewwww...not in a scary sort of way....just ewwwww....}
Knowing full well that the last 10 minutes of the day were a bust because of the appearance of this bug, I turned to my favorite co-worker and I smiled sweetly and said, "Two words: fish pond!"
My favorite co-worker loves feeding the fish. Anytime there is a bug in the parking lot, he will capture it and drop it in the fish pond. The last time was the aforementioned grasshopper.
He captured the stink bug and made his way to the fish pond calling out, "Hey - let me back in the department!" (As if I wouldn't....HELLO - I am nice!)
Literally 10 seconds later, he waltzed through the door gleefully informing me, "They ate it! They ate it! Circle of life!"
Soo back to the "Do I miss teaching?" question. Nope. Not for a second. I get to work with grown men who act like 2nd graders.
The end.
