Sewing Diaries: Class #10

Last night was my last sewing class.  As I drove home from class, I was contemplating all that I've learned.

Types of stitches
How to read patterns
Waistbands are easy-peasy!
Bias tape is nothing to fear.
Sergers - pitter-patter.  Yep, I kind of want one.
Putting zippers in skirts is not painful.
There is an art to hemming.
It's ok to rip out stitches and start over.
Never ever, ever sew when you are tired or emotionally drained.
Iron!  Iron!  Iron!
I heart sewing.

During my 10 classes, I made...
an A-line summery skirt
2 t-shirt tops
started and did not finish a chiffon scarf
2 knit infinity scarves
a summery blouse (It's approximately 2/3 complete.)

Last night, my class consisted of myself, the instructor, and two other girls.  We all had "issues."  Our instructor had had a crazy day and did not make it to the fabric store to buy material for her project.  One of the other girls forgot her pattern and the second girl forgot her fabric.

My issue - I forgot to look for 2nd sewing project.  Turned-out "ok" for me as I spent 30 minutes ripping out zig-zagged stitches.  What did I learn -- baste the shoulder seam first and then zig-zag with the tiniest stitch.  I accidentally sewed the front yoke to the front yoke lining.  Nice.  The neck would've fit Mr. T!!!  No joke!!!  "I pity the fool that messes with my neck yoke!"  Why am I not right???

The girl that forgot her pattern wanted to learn how to make my simple infinity scarf so I helped her cut out the two rectangles.  The night before, I had measured the rectangles (as I was trying to explain in an email-like message how to make the scarf...OiO!)...so I had the numbers stuck in my brain.  39" x 13".  I showed her the first one and then she made a second one out of scrap fabric.  They turned out really cute.  She used a floral linen-ish fabric.  It laid really well.  I'm learning that some fabrics don't do well when making infinity scarves.  Cotton fabric -- you have to add 5 to 6 inches to the length.

I'm going to miss sewing class and at the same time, I'm going to love having Tuesday nights free again.  Is that weird???  I hope not.

Thanks for following my Sewing Diaries.  Now that I can sew, I'm sure there will be other sewing-related posts...especially next week when I want to work on my brother's flannel jammie pants.

It's been awhile.

While I was in The JoAnn Fabrics store this afternoon purchasing pre-punched paper for my 2024 garden journal, I said to myself, "Self,...
