Lesson #1 ~ Lies We Believe about God
Book study: Lies Women Believe by Nancy Leigh DeMoss
Speaker: Roxanne Bodwell
Lie #1 - God is not really good. If He were good, He would ___________________.
Truth: God is good whether or not His choices seem like it. God never makes a mistake.
Psalm 34:8 - "O taste and see that the Lord is good, blessed is the man (woman) that trusteth in Him."
Also read Psalm 107:1; 100:5; 106:1; 119:68
Lie #2 - God doesn't love me.
Truth: God does love me. God is love. God's love is infinite and unconditional. We don't have to earn His love. God always (ALWAYS) has my best interests at heart. His love is not performance-based.
I John 4:7-10 - "Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love. In this was manifested the love of God toward us, because that God sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us, and sent His Son to be the propitiation (payment) for our sins."
Also read Ephesians 3:17-19
Dwell à settle down and feel at home
Rooted à as a tree; spiritual roots into the love of God (Psalm 1)
Grounded à Foundation; deep
Comprehend à Mentally grasping something
Also read Jeremiah 31:3 and Romans 5:8
Lie #3 - God is just like my father.
Truth: God is exactly what He has revealed Himself to be in His Word. Hebrews 1:3; Isaiah 9:6. God is more wise than my earthly father. He is more loving. Matthew 7:9-11
Lie #4 - God is not really enough.
Truth: If I have God, I have enough! God is the ONLY one who can completely understand my fears, my sorrow, and my heartache.
Psalm 73:23-26 - "Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand. Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but thee? And there is none upon earth that I desire beside Thee. My flesh and my heart faileth; but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever."
Lie #5 - God's ways are too restrictive.
Truth: God's ways are best. The "restrictions" are for my good. God's laws are for our emotional, physical, and spiritual protection.
We can choose to disobey Him...but we cannot choose our consequences!
Also read Deuteronomy 6:24, 25
Lie #6 - God should fix all my problems because my unfixed problems mean that God has not come through for me.
- Living an obedient life does spare us from the natural consequences of sin.
- God uses problems to reveal His grace and power.
Truth: Life is hard. God is more concerned with my holiness than with my happiness. God has an eternal purpose that He is fulfilling in the midst of my problems. He wants to use my problems to mold me to be like Him.
Psalm 46:1 - "God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
Romans 5:3-4 - "And not only so, but we glory in tribulation (trouble, problems, trials) also: knowing that tribulations worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope."
Trials ---> patience ---> experience ---> HOPE!
Also read II Corinthians 12:7-10; James 1:2-4
Believing even a portion of any of these lies is still believing the lie. You can tell if you believe any of these lies by how you live.
