So it hit me...
In my head, I knew they were moving...however it didn't really hit me until our most recent monthly department meeting when it was announced that his replacement was chosen and had accepted the position.
He's really gone.
His office has been empty.
The therapy chair has not been sat in.
I know he's gone...but soon his family will be gone too.
I'm pretty much a ridiculous aunt to those fabulous teenagers...and a friend of the wife...and the spoiler of the dogs.
Man, oh man, I really do not like goodbyes.
Someone said goodbyes are grand because you get to say "hello" again. I want to "hello" the sayer of that saying with a smack upside the head. Not really because I am not prone to violence...unless you are a moth or a grasshopper. If you are such insect, "Prepare to die!" and know that I will probably stop at nothing until your demise... If you are not an insect, then take comfort in the fact that I am kind.

I heart flannel sheets.
They put festive flannel sheets on the bed (where I am house-sitting) AND they have a lovely Christmas-y decorated home. It's like staying at a bed && breakfast. .....Well, except that I have to make my own breakfast....and make the bed.... It's like a B&B but different.

My week in review....
Hi! Did you wonder what happened to the girl with curls? Sorry about not blogging this past week....
Let's back-up to last weekend. I spent the weekend moving and unpacking. On Friday, my bestie brought her hubby's pickup and we were able to move 2 full truckloads plus 4 trips for Rosie. Having those day-before-moving-day transfers made Saturday quite a bit easier. Plus I had 10 people show up to help move and haul...and for the girls - unpack!!!
The move itself was easy because of the many hands. I remember waking-up the Saturday morning without a single doubt that God wasn't going to come through and provide just the right amount of help. He did!!! And I soo thankful to those who gave of their time and energy to be a blessing!!!
Sunday was spent unpacking between church and choir. Honestly ~ by the time choir practice had started (5:15 p.m.) I had hit a wall. I vaguely remember walking in to choir late and sitting on the pew just listening and being encouraged.
Monday was more of a blur. Some time around 1:00 p.m. a low-grade temp and a headache reeked havoc with my afternoon plans (Read: typing and filing). So I spent the afternoon answering the phones and attempting edits to a tricky Excel spreadsheet.
Monday night's unpacking gathering was postponed and slumber was a must. MUST!!!
Tuesday was quite pleasant after 9 hours of sweet slumber. A couple friends came over Tuesday evening for chili and gabbing.
Wednesday night we bundled-up and went caroling!!! It was so much fun being a blessing because we all know "the best way to spend Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear."
Thursday....did this past week have a Thursday? :)
Friday was our department luncheon. Fun times!!! I like it when we all get together and have lunch and can chit-chat.
And here it is....Saturday. This morning I had coffee with my bestie who is in town for Christmas. I love how we can pick up right where we left off. I miss her dearly. Two thousand miles separate us but for the next 5 days, they are literally a 1/2 mile away!!!
Note: There is a huge winter storm headed toward to Rockford. Against my better judgement, I attempted to go to Woodmans today. Ummmmmmmm....one glance at the completely packed parking lot and I was pulling out the Dukes of Hazard u-turn and headed in the direction of the red bull's eye. I know, I know....the whole credit card number compromising situation....but IT'S THE BULL'S EYE!!!!! Why was I shocked that Target was crowded too? Helloooooooooo Angie! It's the Saturday before Christmas and the day before the snowstorm.
I managed to remember three things on my forgotten list. (Sigh.)
After shopping, I returned home to pack up an overnight bag for dog-sitting. Sooo here it is Saturday night and I am enjoying an evening in front of a beautiful Christmas tree with 2 ridiculous dogs by my side....and we are watching Hallmark and waiting for the snowstorm to arrive!!!
I actually like weekend snowstorms....especially right before Christmas!!!

In a nutshell...
Dog-sitting during the first 7 days was quasi-uneventful. My life went something like this: work all day, run home and feed & entertain the dogs, hurry off to VBS and be in-charge of a 20-minute craft time, drive back to Cherry Valley to house-/dog-sit. Go to sleep and wake-up and do it all over again.
Honestly - there's a reason why I normally opt-out of VBS during dog-/house-sitting. I'm sure few can understand it...but seriously -- my job is 40 hours and then add on another responsibility and craft-time. It was exhausting.
The Saturday after VBS, I spent the day with my bestie celebrating her birthday. When I asked her where we should meet, she replied, "Where do you think???" It seemed like a silly question after I read her reply. We met where we always meet. Higher Grounds coffee establishment in Freeport, IL. From H.G., we went to Twice as Nice where we both found several fabulous things!!! My favorite find was Ann Taylor Loft jeans. I had been pricing them at the store (WOW-ZAHS, jeans are ex-pen-sive, emphasis added!). Even with a coupon, they were still ridiculous. I found some at Twice as Nice for 90% off the retail price. And the Twice as Nice ones are dark wash and look like new. What a blessing!!! Plus when I wear them, I can remember celebrating Sara's birthday! Bonus.
When I returned from thrifting, I confirmed that the pet goldfish, who was left in my care, was indeed deceased. I wish goldfish could blink. I know that probably sounds creepy...but here was this 5" orange goldfish (Why aren't they called "orange fish"? They aren't gold.) floating mysteriously sideways since Friday. Yes, it had been 24 hours because I wasn't 100% sure he was deceased on Friday and it was just too much to deal with. Ick.
Saturday - his death was confirmed. I had to them get over been creeped out about removing him from his little tank. He was 5" in length which I did not believe should be flushed. First of all - I had killed a fish... Second -- what if when I flushed him, what if he would've gotten stuck? The home-owners would've never let me live this down.
His carcass was removed and thrown in the trash, all the while giving me an extreme case of the heebie-jeebies. I took some of the payment for house-sitting and bought myself Chipotle for supper.
A little later that evening, I sent the family a picture of one of the sleeping dogs. The home owner replied, "Is she dead?" For a millisecond, I considered replying, "No, but your fish is." Not being 100% certain how attached they were to said fish, I just replied, "No. She's sound asleep."
Sooo I am not a fish killer. It turns out fish aren't bright and when I say "bright" I am referring to a bright as a cat. Do you know I can fill up my cat's food dish and leave for the weekend and Maggie will only eat the food she needs. She won't over-eat! Fish and dogs - not that bright. Lovable, but not that bright. They will eat whatever you put infront of them. (The Bible talks about gluttony.) It turns out the new fish food (i.e. gluttony) took his life. Let this be a lesson to the children - don't overeat. His new food was one piece of food per inch of the fish's body. He was 5" and I was feeding him like he was 10". Oops.
Tuesday night I managed to go to the close the blinds and broke the cord. Not even kidding.
At this point, I indulged in some negative self-talk, "Angie Good - you have killed a fish AND broke the blinds. These people are never going to let you house-sit again."
Little did I know that the whole bad-things-happen-in-threes was going to be true about this house-sitting experience.
Twice while the humans were away (TWICE), I put the dogs in their kennel. The first time was during church on Sunday morning. The second time was Wednesday night. I had to meet Trudy and check on Maggie. Wednesday was the only night that worked for Trudy and instead of worrying about the allotted time, I went with it. It was easy-peasy and if we got done in time, I would head to Bible study and if not, (GASP!) it was not a crisis. I had bigger fish to fry. Oh wait - not literally. He was dead. (Sigh.)
Met Trudy. She got her stuff from the Ebay selling. Shortly after she left (i.e. 5 minutes), I headed back to Cherry Valley. The time was not conducive for me to try to rush across town and attend the last 25 minutes on Bible study. (Disappointed.)
I brought the dogs in from their kennel and after an amazing night's sleep, it was Thursday.
Work was fine. Busy but not a drive-me-crazy kind of day.
Thursday night I feed the dogs and throw the ball for those clowns. Several minutes later, the neighbor comes across the street and informs me that Animal Services had been there the night before and returned today with a violation notice on the front door. (Not. Even. Kidding.)
Yep - a yellow note stating the dogs were barking and disturbing the peace in Cherry Valley.
Again the whole, "You killed the fish and broke the blinds AND had Animal Control stop by" speech started up. I stopped the negative self-chatter. It's not healthy. I replaced it, "I did not burn the house down. I've kept the dogs alive. I've remembered to take the trash out on Trash Day. I'm a good house-sitter. Bad things happen to good people." (Literally Good people. LOL! And there was my saving grace ---> I STILL HAD MY SENSE OF HUMOR!!!!!)
I called Animal Services and left them a lengthy message. They returned my call about 30 minutes later. I explained that I was house-sitter and I did not know about the disturbing-the-peace ordinance. The violation was going in a Violation Folder (I imagined a recycle bin. Too each his own.) and all is well.
The next day, I did look online and wouldn't you know - there's a law that states any animal the disturbs the peace day or night is a common criminal.
Friday I packed-up my belongings and hauled everything out to Rosie before I headed out to work. I informed the dogs, "Your humans will be home today. If not until later, I will see you guys after work...otherwise, go and watch I Love Lucy re-runs and please be good." Yes, I do talk to them like they are humans. I think they understand me. [One night Kila came upstairs at 4-something in the morning and I said to her, "If you don't get downstairs and go back to sleep, I am going to kill you just like the fish!!!!!!" Would I really take a dog's life? No. She knew I was serious because she hurried back downstairs.]
I left a note for the humans.
The following things happened while you were away...
1) about Animals Services. I promise they were only outside twice. I've called about the violation and all is well.
2) I broke the cord off the blinds. Not sure how it happened. Sorry.
3) RIP fishy. --> I drew a bubble and wrote, "Soooooo sorry."
Friday at 2:30-ish, I received the following text: "Angie, the blinds were broke before you got here. It was taped. The dogs have been in trouble with the law before this. It's ok. We are surprised the fish lived as long as it did. We really hope this all didn't stress you out too much. Thanks again."
I will say this all this craziness....my co-workers and friends got a good laugh. One co-worker said, "Angela, in 5 days time, you went from sweet to a breaker of things not yours, a criminal breaking the law, and lastly a fish murderer." Nice.
Today (Saturday) I am thrilled beyond belief to be home...my quiet cottage...my slumbering cat...my cupboards with only gluten-free foods...{Sigh.}
Dorothy was right.
There's no place like home.

Dead fish
I have 3 responsibilities: care for the dogs, feed the fish and keep an eye on the house. Two of the three responsibilities are going quite well. The third - not so well. The fish. It's dead. Dead, as in totally deceased. (Sigh.)
Never have I killed a fish. I mean, I had a fish commit suicide. He totally jumped out of his fishbowl only to end up in that "big fishbowl in the sky" if that's even where deceased fishies go.
Tonight I watched a cute YouTube video of a little girl telling her videotaping mom that her fish looked dead because the other fish had nibbled on him. How sad...being attacked by your fishy friends. What tragedy.
Soo my fish conundrum is as such - do I just dump the water and fish out? Am I required to bury it? Should I make a grave market? I cannot flush him. He's kind of big and I am pretty sure he is not flushable.
I really did not plan on having to bury a fish.
I hope the human to whom he belongs still thinks I am the greatest Fun Angoe this side of the Mississippi River.

Walking the dogs
In the movies, screenwriters make dog walking look like a pleasant experience. Tonight I took the dogs for a walk - er, rather, they took me for a walk.
What did I expect with 2 labs - each weighing 80 pounds. 160 pounds of CRAZY CANINE + Fun Angie = a ridiculous outing
When we turned from Main Street on to the street of their residence, one dog went one way and the other circled around me on the other side. (You know in cartoons when the leashes wrap around the dog walker's legs and they nearly tumble to the ground???? Yep! That was me. Kila went one way and Maddie went the other and I sent prayers upward!!!!) Thankfully, there was not a mishap. I did amuse one motorized vehicle as they drove past and honked. The honking was short little blasts so I am pretty sure the driver was cracking-up. You're welcome!!!! :)

Soooo they have this gazebo.......
Normally it's hot and swarming with mosquitoes so I do not get to enjoy the gazebo.
Today it's 67º with a nice breeze and the mosquitoes are not gnawing on me.

14 gazillion random things...
Oh - and these are in no particular order.
1. Last night - girls' night out. Pedicures at 7. Red Mango after pedis and then back to the patio which turned into the kitchen table because of the mosquitoes.
2. I survived house- / dog-sitting. The dogs survived. The fish survived. The humans returned. All is well. The only casualties: 20 or so mosquitoes. I know I'm sweet but SERIOUSLY - don't bite me!
3. Wednesday's word of the day: Snarky. As in - there was a whole lotta snarkiness going around.
4. Company picnic tomorrow ------> I found out today that I am NOT on the clean-up committee!!! Wahooooo! My job is to help plan and do the shopping. I like this committee. The pre-picnic committee. Tomorrow I get to go and help with registration and play some Bingo and maybe win some Target gift cards. [Happy dance!!!]
5. I found a really cute purple Merona [Target] dress. It's short sleeved and plain. I'm picturing it with a fabulous scarf and some sassy flats. Also, during the same thrift-before-I-got-my-haircut-off shopping extravaganza, I snagged another Merona sundress. It's patterned with coral, purple, brown, and white. It was at Target last summer. Oh - and when I found it at the Goodwill - it still had the tags on it. Yep! Be jealous. Be very jealous.
6. Why is it that I don't ever remember that I forgot to add laundry soap until the water is half-spun-out of the washer??? Of course, by then, it's too late. (Sigh.)
7. My favorite co-worker and his family might be relocating and I am not handling this very well.
8. Tonight I swept and mopped my kitchen & bathroom. It's been awhile since I did that. Not "a while" as in months and months....but "it's been awhile" as in a couple weeks. I know it's been 2 weeks since I mopped. I think it's only been a few days since I swept. I like it that the kitchen is clean. I wiped down the countertops, cleaned the ceiling fan, and changed-out the under-the-burner silver trays. When I change out those silver liners for new ones, I feel like my kitchen just sparkles...until I spill something on them. It's a vicious circle.
9. About my haircut. It's not drastic. Think Meg Ryan in You've Got Mail. It might be a smidge bit longer than Meg's haircut in that movie. It flips-up nicely. And I love it curly with big curls.
10. TEN! I MADE IT TO TEN ITEMS!!!! Yeah me. I made it to the gym tonight. I believe I have about 15 more hours to go in order to make my summer goal for 40 hours of cardio. Why in the world did I select 40 hours when 30 hours was perfectly normal? (Sigh.) I guess I had better get crackin'. I have 8 weeks left.

Weirdness
My biggest issue with this nightmare-come-to-life ordeal is that there are sooo many subcontractors within this one project that I am not sure how I want to organize this...and it's up to me because I will be the one fetching the documents. Soooo...no pressure...but I had better make it understandable lest in ten years when someone wants some random document from this file, I will be spending an entire day tracking it down.
After four hours of being surrounded by reports and invoices, I decided to go sit outside and enjoy my lunch. Isn't this weather we are having just lovely? High 70's and extremely low humidity. Today I threw caution to the wind and.... A) left my hair curly and unruly; B) wore my glasses; C) drove to and from work with the windows down singing along with the radio. I'm fairly certain that guys in the pick-up next to me at the stoplight at Sandy Hollow and 11th Street enjoyed the crazy, curly-haired girl's rendition of whatever was currently playing on the radio.
After lunch, I made sure to send a picture of my office area to my friend Misty complete with a note "See -- I really am working today!" Ha. ha. ha. ha. It wasn't more than 0.3 seconds after pressing SEND that my phone rang. Caller ID told me that it was Misty...I picked up the phone laughing... She informed me of my not-rightness...which is fine. I mean, seriously - we've been friends for 15 years! She knows I'm not right. I know she's not right. :) Didn't your mother teach you -- Birds of a feather flock together.
The rest of the day flew by...4:30 came and went - as did the girl with curly hair.
After coming back and taking care of the dogs, I locked them in the house and went and checked on Maggie. I have to tell you the saddest thing. Soooo I gave her some food, fresh water, and some love. Then as I was walking out to my car, I heard the saddest "Meeeeeow" ever. It was pitiful. I felt awful leaving her again...so I went back inside and talked to her and made sure she was okay. Poor Magster misses her human after all. You see, she is usually snobby - with her nose up in the air, she prances about like she doesn't need / miss me. Well...apparently 11 days being without one's human has made her re-think our relationship. Maybe now she won't be so persnickety. Before leaving the second time, I told her, "One more sleep and then I will be home. Tomorrow night - it's you and me cleaning the cottage!" I think that will suffice.
Once I left for real, I decided that I had better hit the gym...atleast for cardio. And that, my friends, is exactly what I did. After the gym - I bought a strawberry poppy seed chicken salad from Panera and headed back to Cherry Valley for my last "sleep" with the doggies.
Am I sad that my house- / dog-sitting gig is over? Kind of - in a sense. I like these dogs. They are cute. But I miss my quiet, little cottage with my feline. Soooo...no worries. I will say "yes" to the house- / dog-sitting gig again...but for now, I'll be dreaming of my Home Sweet Cottage.
Toodles. :)
It's been awhile.
